Propagating philodendron varieties in water is a simple and rewarding way to expand your indoor jungle. Whether you have a Monstera, Heartleaf, Pink Princess, or any other philodendron, the process begins by selecting a healthy stem with nodes. Look for a section with at least two nodes (the little bumps near where leaves attach to the stem). Using a clean, sharp knife or scissors, cut just below a node.
Remove the lower leaves near the cut, leaving a few leaves on top for photosynthesis. Place the stem in a jar or vase filled with clean water, ensuring the nodes are submerged. Choose a spot with bright, indirect sunlight and refresh the water every few days to keep it clear.
Roots should begin to appear within a few weeks. Once the roots are a few inches long, you can transplant your philodendron into soil, or simply let it continue to grow in water. With just a little patience and care, you’ll have new plants to enjoy and share for a long time to come!
